Privacy Policy

Cliphy ("we", "us", "our") is a Chrome extension that summarizes YouTube videos using AI. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. Information We Collect

Account information — your email address, collected via Google OAuth when you sign in.
YouTube video metadata — video ID, title, channel name, and duration for videos you explicitly choose to summarize.
Video transcripts — retrieved temporarily to generate summaries. Transcripts are not stored permanently.
Usage data — summary counts, queue activity, and timestamps to enforce plan limits and display time-saved metrics.
Tags — user-created and AI-suggested labels applied to summaries for organization.
Payment information — handled entirely by Stripe. We never see, receive, or store your card details.

2. How We Use Your Information

To authenticate you and manage your account.
To generate AI-powered video summaries on your request.
To enforce usage limits and process subscription payments.
To suggest tags for your summaries using AI, based on summary content and your existing tags (Pro feature).
To improve the service using aggregate, anonymized usage patterns.

3. Browser Permissions

Cliphy requests the following Chrome permissions. Each is used for a specific purpose:

Permission	Why we need it
`tabs`	Detects when you navigate to a YouTube video so the extension can activate. Also used to send messages to the content script and open summary pop-out views.
`storage`	Stores your authentication token locally so you stay signed in.
`identity`	Facilitates Google OAuth sign-in.
`contextMenus`	Adds a right-click "Add to Cliphy" option on YouTube video pages.
`sidePanel`	Renders the extension's main interface as a Chrome side panel.

Our only host permission is https://www.youtube.com/*. The content script runs exclusively on YouTube to detect video pages and read metadata. We do not access any other websites.

4. AI Processing

When you request a summary, the video transcript is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing. Anthropic processes transcripts in real time and does not retain them after generating the summary. Anthropic does not use your data for model training. See Anthropic's privacy policy.

For the AI auto-tagging feature (Pro), summary content and your existing tag names are sent to the Claude API to generate tag suggestions. This data is processed in real time and is not retained by Anthropic.

5. Third-Party Services

We share data with the following service providers, solely to operate Cliphy:

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party.

6. What We Do Not Do

We do not sell your data.
We do not track your browsing activity outside of YouTube.
We do not use cookies or tracking pixels in the extension.
We do not store raw video transcripts after summary generation.
We do not use your data for advertising or profiling.

7. Data Retention

Free users: Summaries are retained for 7 days, then automatically deleted.
Pro users: Summaries are retained for the duration of your subscription.
Account data: Retained until you request deletion.
Video transcripts: Not stored. Used only during real-time summary generation.

8. Account Deletion

You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing cliphy.ai+privacy@gmail.com. Upon receiving your request, we will:

Delete your account and authentication records.
Delete all summaries and queue items.
Cancel any active subscription via Stripe.
Remove your data from our database within 30 days.

Some data may be retained in encrypted backups for up to 90 days before being permanently removed.

9. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures including:

HTTPS encryption for all data in transit.
Encrypted database storage (Supabase with AES-256).
Short-lived authentication tokens stored in session-scoped browser storage.
Row-level security policies restricting data access to the owning user.

10. Data Location

Your data is processed and stored on servers located in the United States. If you are located outside of the United States, your information is transferred to and processed in the US. By using Cliphy, you consent to this transfer.

11. Your Rights

Regardless of where you are located, you have the right to:

Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction — request correction of inaccurate data.
Deletion — request deletion of your personal data.
Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.
Objection — object to processing based on legitimate interest.

For European users (GDPR)

Our legal bases for processing your data are: consent (when you sign up and authorize access), contractual necessity (to provide the service you requested), and legitimate interest (to improve the service). You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

For California users (CCPA)

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request its deletion, and opt out of its sale. We do not sell personal information. To make a request, email cliphy.ai+privacy@gmail.com.

12. Children's Privacy

Cliphy is not intended for use by children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you via the extension or by email. Continued use of Cliphy after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
